FORMER OWNER MARY ROPES LAKEMAN: This copy was previously owned by Mary Ropes Lakeman, per the ex libris stick (which reflects inclusion in a private personal library vs a public library.) Mary Ropes Lakeman of Essex, Massachusetts, was a suffragette and part of the broader women's suffrage movement in Massachusetts, advocating for women's right to vote in the early 20th century. She was also a doctor at a time when few women were permitted by society to practice medicine. Dr. Lakeman was one of the early female physicians at a time when women were beginning to enter the medical field in greater numbers. She practiced medicine in the early 20th century and was likely part of the growing movement of women who sought to challenge gender barriers in the profession.
